Medialab Matadero
In 2022, the studio was commissioned by the Medialab Matadero Research Unit in Madrid to develop a series of architectural furniture devices designed to support artists, designers, and researchers. This project represents a refined application of the studio's M15 design system, a methodology previously tested at La Casa Encendida, which prioritizes material circularity, small-scale local manufacturing, and the use of informal material sources.
The intervention consists of three specialized mobile devices, each fulfilling a unique functional role within the residency environment: Printing, Archiving, and Broadcasting. These tools were conceptualized not as static furniture, but as flexible support systems that integrate seamlessly into Medialab's dynamic workflow. The "Broadcasting" device, for instance, features a detachable tower and folding table equipped with articulated arms for recording equipment, allowing for both physical and virtual presence during interactive sessions.
Complementing these functional hubs, the team designed the RejiBand Chairs, a series of unique seating units crafted from upcycled Rejiband cable trays. These chairs exemplify the studio's ability to recontextualize industrial components into ergonomic, lightweight, and high-performance design objects. By utilizing standardized industrial elements like cable trays and modular frameworks, the design team ensured that the entire collection remains cohesive, durable, and deeply rooted in the concept of "urban mining."
As part of the "collections" scale, MediaLab Matadero serves as a laboratory for territorial material arrangements. Through this project, the studio demonstrates how architectural furniture can foster collective thinking and institutional memory while maintaining a strict commitment to sustainability and the creative transformation of industrial remnants.
