TARA Stools
Developed in 2023, the TARA Stools collection is an exploration of the beauty found in production misfits and raw natural elements. The project’s title derives from the Spanish word "tara," which refers to an imperfection or a defect—an object that is typically rejected by the industrial market because it fails to meet standardized ideals of function or form.
For this series, the design team sought to challenge the rigid aesthetics of mass production by highlighting the unique character of "imperfect" materials. The stools feature a structural tripod base crafted from remaining steel bars, salvaged from the studio's previous furniture production for the La Casa Encendida cafeteria in Madrid. This choice not only reinforces the team's commitment to material circularity but also provides a minimal, industrial framework that elevates the centerpiece of each stool: a unique, raw rock.
The collection is characterized by its diversity, resulting in nine distinct variations where random geological finds are integrated into the metallic tripods. The stools were designed in three sizes—Tall, Medium, and Small—ensuring a functional range that adapts to different spatial needs. By selecting rocks that fall within a comfortable seating height (approximately 45cm), the studio transforms a heavy, unyielding natural element into a functional piece of furniture.
The TARA Stools have gained international recognition through their exhibition at the Madre Natura show during the Madrid Design Festival 2023 and the Makers 2 exhibition at the Caselli 11-12 Gallery in Milan. This collection stands as a poetic reminder of the means required to achieve industrial functions, urging us to find value in the "misfits" of our material world and to re-establish a connection with nature through contemporary design.
