Colgao
Developed in 2006 in collaboration with Enpieza!, Colgao is one of the studio’s most enduring and recognizable early projects. This coat hanger serves as a poignant example of the studio’s ability to imbue everyday functional objects with narrative depth, humor, and a touch of social commentary. By recontextualizing a simple anthropomorphic form into a utilitarian tool, the design team created a piece that transcends its domestic function to become a sculptural statement on the human condition.
The conceptual core of Colgao—which translates from Spanish as both "hanging" and "crazy"—lies in the literal and metaphorical act of suspension. The studio designed the piece to represent a stylized human figure that appears to be hanging from the wall, using its own body as the hook for garments. This visual irony transforms a mundane action—hanging up a coat—into a theatrical gesture. The project reflects the studio's interest in the emotional resonance of objects, exploring how a subtle shift in form can provoke a smile, a thought, or a sense of unease within the domestic environment.
Technically, the project is characterized by its minimalist execution and material efficiency. The design team utilized laser-cut steel to achieve a precise, clean silhouette that ensures structural integrity while maintaining a light visual profile. Each unit is powder-coated in various colors, providing a durable finish suitable for high-use environments. The geometry of the figure is carefully calculated: the "limbs" and "head" are positioned at specific angles to prevent clothes from slipping, proving that the studio's focus on narrative never compromises the object’s primary functional requirements.
As an early entry in the studio’s portfolio, Colgao helped establish a design language that values conceptual clarity and the "bastardization" of standard typologies. It has been showcased in international design fairs and featured in numerous global publications, remaining a best-seller that bridges the gap between commercial design and contemporary art. For the team, Colgao remains a testament to the power of simplicity—a reminder that a well-executed idea can turn the most ordinary corner of a house into a space for reflection.
