SSEIV, CAP Department, El Horrio
Developed between 2022 and 2023, the S.S. IV (Sound System IV), nicknamed "El Hórreo", is a site-specific audio installation designed for the headquarters of the film and photography production company CAP in A Coruña, Spain. This piece marks an evolution in the studio’s sound research, moving from a nomadic object to an architectural anchor that defines the identity of a professional creative space.
The design team conceptualized El Hórreo as a monumental volume that references Galician vernacular architecture while maintaining the collection’s radical material logic. Built using upcycled poplar plywood and integrated into the project’s almost mono-material envelope, the structure serves as both a high-fidelity loudspeaker and a spatial divider. True to the studio's "pro-cycling" principles, the assembly avoids glues, utilizing heat-blackened screws and a water-based varnish to ensure a non-toxic finish and future circularity.
Acoustically, El Hórreo is engineered to fill a large industrial-scale office with a balanced and powerful soundscape. It features a 3-way high-definition frequency division system equipped with high-end B&C speakers. The technical heart of the system includes a Crown 2500 stereo power amplifier, delivering 1000 RMS watts of crystalline audio. The interior is treated with 100% recycled textile geopanels, providing the necessary acoustic dampening to handle high sound pressure levels without distortion.
As a central element of the CAP Coruña project, the S.S. IV demonstrates how the studio integrates specialized hardware into architectural commissions. It is not merely a speaker, but a "breathing" furniture piece that processes the atmosphere of the shared space through sound, proving that technical performance and sustainable material narratives can be seamlessly fused in contemporary office design.
